Zone system

Also called: zones

A way of placing tones on a 0 through 10 scale, devised by Ansel Adams.

The zone system divides every possible tone into eleven zones: Zone 0 is pure black, Zone 10 is pure white, Zone 5 is middle grey, which is what every meter is calibrated to. By picking a tone in your scene and consciously placing it on a specific zone, you get total control over how the image will reproduce on film. The app's zone calculator and AR overlay let you tap any spot in the scene and see what zone the current exposure would place it in.
