Aperture

Also called: f-stop, f-number

The opening inside the lens that controls how much light passes through.

Aperture is described by an f-number such as f/2.8 or f/11. A smaller number means a wider opening and more light; a larger number means a narrower opening and less light. Aperture also controls depth of field: wider apertures give shallower focus, narrower apertures give more in focus. Each whole f-stop change either doubles or halves the light, the same as one stop of shutter or ISO.
