Incident light
Light that is falling onto your subject, as opposed to bouncing off it.
An incident meter sits at the subject and points back at the camera, measuring the light hitting the scene. This is the most accurate way to meter for portraits because it does not care about whether the subject is dark or light skinned, dressed in black, or backlit. Most phone meters are reflective; incident metering on a phone requires a translucent diffuser over the front camera, which is on the roadmap.
