Depth of field

Also called: DoF

The range of distances in your scene that look acceptably sharp.

Wide apertures (f/1.4, f/2.8) give shallow depth of field where only the subject is in focus and everything else falls into pleasing blur. Narrow apertures (f/11, f/16) extend depth of field so the foreground and background are both sharp. Depth of field also depends on focal length and how close you are to the subject. The hyperfocal calculator finds the focus distance that maximizes depth of field for a given aperture.
